After the recent death of our king Pedro I, Enrique de Trastámara occupies the throne of Castilla.
The last 23 March, Pedro the Righteous, who lasts 16 years ruling Castilla, has been murdered in Montiel by his stepbrother, Enrique de Trastámara, and this ends the Castilian Civil War and gives the throne to the new king, Enrique. Now that the war is over, is the moment to explain what has given rise to it and why.
Pedro was the only son of María de Portugal and Alfonso XI de Castilla, who had other 10 children with his lover, Leonor de Guzmán. Legally, the succession of the throne should be for Pedro, but though, at the king’s death, one of the ten stepbrothers of Pedro, Enrique, had possibilities to rule. Nonetheless, the throne was occupied by Pedro, but he never couted on much support. He had the support of the musilims and french, since he was committed with a descendent of the king of France, but as he finally rejected her, he got enemy with France, and they also supported his stepbrother, who kept wishing the throne of Castilla.
In 1366, Enrique de Trastámara saw himself with enough support, and decided attack Pedro. Looking for an army, Pedro got allied with the Black Prince, who sent his army in exchange for he paying the expenses. Since Pedro didn’t pay what he should, the army didn’t defend him, and Pedro went to the kingdom of Granada looking for support. After he joined an army, Pedro started his return to Castilla, but Enrique’s army went to meet him, and it was provocated the Battle of Montiel, in Ciudad Real. There, they locked Pedro, and then, a mate of Enrique cheated on him so he could take him to the place where camped the army of his stepbrother, and there he has been murdered by Enrique de Trastámara.
Now his body lies in the Castle of Montiel, maybe one day he will be transfered to another place. RIP.
